As Paul Krugman noted this morning, US/Europe avg tariff pre Trump was 1.5%. Elon is too stupid to have recognized how good he had it.

Exactly. He can’t have it both ways. What an egomaniacal, shortsighted jerk.

I know all of this is bigger than "karma gonna get you" but I do believe in my heart that the universe does keep score and Musk's day is coming. I hope whatever it is (death by a thousand cuts, one hopes) I am front row center for the pain and humiliation this man deserves while karma, the bitch, must be served. Pop the popcorn, I am so ready.

Two things: 1 ). Please alert all the media folks you know to stop saying that the Hands Off movement is "owned" by the Democrats. On NPR radio around 7 am this morning, the man being interviewed (a journalist, reporter I'm assuming) who had been at the D.C. protest called it something like "the movement by the Democrats". No! This movement is Everyman/woman's movement. If the media keep saying that, it'll never get off the ground. It constantly has to be described as a pro-democracy movement which includes every human in this country (and the globe actually). Also, why have I heard and read "so-called" Hands Off movement. No! It's the pro-democracy Hands Off movement. Sheesh.

2) Musk alert: I have a friend in France who wrote me that she had read that Musk sent (not Trump, but Musk) a letter to the French Embassy telling it to pressure companies in France not to hire any DEI people. Her reaction was, of course, very resentful to have Musk importing his agenda into France. My take: MAGA people are now in control of all US Embassies. That is huge. And must be followed. Musk has a big baked in network across the globe that he is using to advance his globe changing spheres of influence. Using businesses first (of course, that makes sense). Could you follow up on that fact of Musk sending such letters (instructions, really) to our US embassies? It may seem obvious he would that to people in the diplomatic and higher journalist echelons, but not to people like me. I'd like to know more about that embassy situation. Also, more attention needs to be made of protests in other countries such as France, Greenland and elsewhere. This is a global situation and the more Americans learn of these schemes by the ultra wealthy and very powerful people the better we can step up and stop it.

3) Please let me slip this one in: Musk "hoping" that the European countries and the US will have zero tariffs between them. Oh sure! As long as they accept his demands and give up all alliances (such as doing away with regulations, snubbing rules of law, turning into Trump/Musk/Vought clones. Whew. Thank you for reading.

"Musk sent (not Trump, but Musk) a letter to the French Embassy telling it to pressure companies in France not to hire any DEI people." That is DISGUSTING. I suppose, back in the early 1930's, he would have sent a letter to Hans-Heinrich Dieckhoff pressuring him to pressure companies in Germany not to hire any Jews.

Your first comment reflects my assertion that we are far too often uninformed, malinformed, and misinformed by major media. One of the ways that happens is trying to force everything into a framework of Democrats versus GOPpers with the main focus on how any event affects the political future of the parties - the classic "horserace" style of coverage of election campaigns expanded to every sociopolitical issue or concern in the entire nation.

My Congressional representative keeps hammering how she opposes the open borders of the past administration (no, they were not open) insisting that all those criminals will no longer come in. Some criminals! She is a heartless MAGAt fanatic.

Note well: These people are not against "illegal" immigration or undocumented immigration or even immigration by criminals. There are against immigration, period. "America is for Americans and Americans only," declared Stephen Miller at a Trump rally at Madison Square Garden this past fall.

If I didn't know better, I'd think there was a backroom Musk-Trump contest to see who could cause the most suffering in the shortest period of time.

Nice report!

my comment for today all day everywhere: There is a group that knew Executive Orders would destroy Democracy and salivated at the idea... shall I say Heritage Foundation? Between EO's & Citizens United we had a Trojan Horse come in to take our country away and hand it to the oligarchs. They plopped a guy in the saddle that only responds to green shiny objects but their hands are on the wheel... We cannot stop, it will be hard work and we must build the wall they can't break down to get what they want. I am tired , scared and will do what I can...as my sign states "I can't believe I still have to protest this F**KING SH*T" your 78 yo hippie here..still standing.

hey oldster, i'm a mere 72 yo. remember way back in 1967 March on Washington, when Abbie Hoffman, et al, wanted to levitate the Pentagon? That got attention. Something similar has gotta happen now. Not just gray hairs marching on state capitals. The rulers must become uncomfortable.

I don’t understand how one party of a contract can unilaterally cancel the contract, especially without any financial penalties. Isn’t that the point of a contract?

Glad to see you cover the cut in aid for legal assistance to unaccompanied minors in immigration courts.

I've been using that fact to go after my local right-wing Congresscritter who claims to be very concerned about human trafficking but has said nothing about this cut, which puts those already-at-risk children in even greater risk of being trafficked.

The report states, "Defunding legal representation for immigrant children could increase the risk of children being sent to places where they could be subjected to human trafficking or other abuses." Please explain. What are examples of "places where [children] could be subjected to human trafficking or other abuses"? What "other abuses"?

I hope this was a question asked in good faith looking for context and not a troll. Most of these unaccompanied minors were sent by their parents away from violent gang-controlled areas, poverty, and unhealthy conditions.

No parent sends their minor child hundreds of miles away for no reason.

These children are expected to plead their case by themselves in a foreign land and a court system they do not understand? Providing legal assistance is the 'least' we could do.
